The start of a new year brings myriad opportunities for personal and professional growth to those who are willing to take action. Many successful entrepreneurs take the first month of the year to set goals and plan the company’s trajectory, knowing that no one can hit the target if it doesn’t exist or they don’t know where it is. Setting goals and communicating them to the rest of the team creates a sense of partnership and responsibility. Now everyone is moving in the same direction. And that leads to increased sales and revenue.

There are times, however, when life throws you a curveball. We’ve experienced many of them over the past two years as we’ve worked through pandemic-related economic challenges. In those times, it’s easy to get frustrated over things you can’t control. These are the moments when you’re tempted to give up and do something easier. But these are also the moments that lead to the most growth if you can stick with them and push through them.

The Power of a Positive Mental Attitude

A positive mindset is one of the most important attributes to develop as an entrepreneur. A strongly positive attitude gives you the courage and fortitude to persevere in the face of challenges, regardless of the size. It also leads to a healthier outlook on life, in general, fostering creativity, productivity, and better relationships with coworkers, family members, and friends.

Many people underestimate the power of positive thinking, scoffing at optimists, and making fun of those who work hard at maintaining a positive attitude. These naysayers believe their positive-thinking counterparts aren’t living in reality. After all, life is hard, right? You’re supposed to struggle. And make sure to tell everyone about it too.

How many people do you know who are like that? Hopefully, it’s not you…

Optimists see the glass as half full rather than half empty. When met with obstacles, they look for a way around, over, under, or through them. They don’t take no for an answer. Rather, they think creatively about how to accomplish the goal in other ways. A positive mindset is at the heart of all this.

Make a Change for the Better

Here’s how to train yourself to think more positively.

Choose to be happy. It sounds a little strange, but it works. Living from a place of positivity and happiness — rather than fear and negativity — is a conscious choice. Make it now.

Start with one happy thought. Set your intent for the day by thinking one happy thought. It can be about anything. The point is that you’re thinking of something that makes you feel good and elevates your energy.

Practice gratitude. Focusing on everything you’re grateful for is a great way to foster a positive attitude. Start the day by being thankful for something, even if it’s just lighter traffic on the way to the office!

Bat away negative thoughts before they can take hold. Negative thoughts are bound to creep in during the day. When they do, don’t beat yourself up over them. Recognize they’re there, and then bat them away like a pesky fly. The point here is not to let them get you down. Focusing on negative thoughts when they show up keeps you locked in fear. Instead, ask yourself how you can turn the situation around mentally and see it from a healthier perspective.

Limit exposure to the news. There’s very little that’s positive in the news on most days. It’s not that nothing good happens; it’s just that bad news sells better. Limiting the time you spend watching the news, whether on TV or online, helps keep your mind clear and focused on what needs to be done. An added benefit? You’ll also have more time to spend on positive things — like taking your kids to the park.

Exercise daily. Get your body moving every day. Even a little physical activity stimulates chemicals in your brain that lead to all kinds of good things, including a clearer mind and better overall health. Start small. Park farther away from the office door. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Get that blood moving in your veins!

Take action. Start each day looking for ways to be cheerful and happy. Say hi to coworkers. Hold the door open for someone. Pay for the coffee of the person behind you in the Starbucks line. Do something nice for someone. You’ll be surprised at how warm it makes you feel.

The Top Line

Savvy business owners know that a positive attitude leads to business success. It opens your mind to greater possibilities, motivates you to take action, and encourages you to take reasonable risks when necessary. A positive mental outlook also makes you more likable, which means people are more willing to work with you to accomplish shared goals.

Use this year to create a better attitude and better business results. Let’s make 2022 a year of growth and achievement, both personally and professionally!
